From following a thread on Facebook, yesterday I gathered that a former colleague had died suddenly. I watched as the messages began to tick in on her page, messages of grief, disbelief and sorrow. And I sent my own, knowing that she wouldn’t read it but knowing that her family would. To let them know that she was loved and appreciated and would be missed.

Her last status update was from the day before. Sent from her phone as she was waiting for the train. Nothing spectacular. Nothing stupid, either.

I’m put stupid updates on Facebook all the time. (Only so very rarely are they spectacular!)

How I hate those reminders that life is short and we’re here now and every moment can be our last. But I value the gift in them too.

So, dear friend. I hope you are enjoying your life. I hope you are loved.

You are here.

A jarring reminder of the frailty in our existence. What a jolt.

I tell my family every day, each and every one of them, that I love them. Still, with this backdrop, it doesn’t seem nearly enough.
